Michael Fedor, higher education executive, award-winning author, and former Vice President of Advancement & Strategic Initiatives at Central Penn College, has built his career at the intersection of leadership, storytelling, and education. In a recent address in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Fedor spoke to college presidents and executives about the future of higher education and the qualities institutions must cultivate to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

“Higher education has always been about more than degrees,” Fedor told the leaders. “It’s about shaping lives of meaning, service, and impact. Agile planning coupled with powerful storytelling is at the heart of how we connect mission with people’s aspirations.”

Drawing from his experience leading Central Penn through a bold strategic plan, Fedor emphasized three themes:

  • Visionary Leadership: Leaders must face challenges with candor while creating a hopeful path forward.
  • The Power of Story: Institutions must tell compelling, authentic stories that inspire students, donors, and partners.
  • Agility: Institutions must take lessons from Silicon Valley, using sound business models to remain laser focused on their core audience and agile planning to pivot as necessary to adapt to a changing marketplace
  • Education as Civic Mission: Colleges must prepare graduates not only for careers, but for citizenship, leadership, and service in an increasingly tumultuous world.

The keynote resonated with listeners, blending academic strategy with narrative insight. “Michael’s ability to connect vision and have a finger on the pulse of what is going on in higher education right now is invaluable to these leaders,” said CECU President Jason Altmire.

As an author, consultant, and higher education leader, Fedor continues to champion innovative planning techniques and powerful storytelling as tools to inspire communities and advance institutional missions. His message: when education is led with authenticity and courage, and it maintains an eye on who it is truly there to serve, its future remains bright.
